This year marks 20 years of Y-3, the collaborative project between adidas and Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto. To celebrate the grandiose milestone, the duo is preparing to debut a new in-line division, Y-3 Atelier.

The chapter hones in on state-of-the-art craftsmanship and innovative design that expands on the partnership’s expressive outlook. By paying tribute to Yamamoto’s fearless mentality, Y-3 Atelier continues to explore the collision of sportswear and avant-garde fashion through a bold lens sharpened with elevated performance techniques. Each collection will focus on a unique narrative that tells a tale about Yamamoto’s design journey and will showcase graphics taken from previous designer runways.

The seasonal backbone will draw upon the Japanese word “Monozukuri” — translating to “production” in English. Anchored by a craft-focused process, Y-3 Atelier debuts a detailed approach to design that breaks traditional boundaries. The first collection nods to signature adidas codes while previewing transformational menswear and womenswear for the current generation. Asymmetrical maxi dresses boast dynamic pop collars and a single pinned closure at the chest, while Three Stripes branding moves with the body’s natural curves. Staple suiting is matched with sheer button-down shirts alongside knitted polos with co-branded touches. Finally, essential trench coats are given a contemporary spin, working next to slouchy bottoms that reveal animated graphics beneath.

Take a closer look at Y-3 Atelier’s first collection above. The range will be exclusively released via SSENSE on March 2nd, 3rd, and 5th through a pop-up in Paris at 42 Rue de Sévigné open from 11am to 7pm.

Elsewhere, UNDERCOVER FW23 pays tribute to musical legends.
