Is Daytona Beach affected by seaweed? ›

I often hear people complaining about the seaweed that is on the beach. It's not always there, of course, but there are times when the tide brings in quite a bit of it. Yes, it can dot the beach, and yes, it can become stinky as it breaks down.

MSW, which was created in Kingsbridge, south Devon in 2002, was bought by Surfline in 2017. Ben Freeston, founder of MSW, told BBC News losing the name was "emotional", but he was "excited for the future".

Most bigger surf towns have their main, pier surf spot. Here in Daytona, there are two spots at the Main Street Pier- the north side and the south side. On the south side, it can get really fast and peaky during a south swell on the sand bottom.

"If large amounts of sargassum do come to Florida at that time — late May or early June — the most impacted areas will be the lower Florida Keys (ocean side) and along the southeast coast of Florida (Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, etc)," Hu said.

Because of the similarity in names, Daytona Beach Shores is frequently confused with Daytona Beach, which borders to the north. Daytona Beach Shores is much smaller with fewer hotels and a higher concentration of condominiums instead of hotels.

The beach is accessible and free for pedestrians and bicyclists 24 hours a day, depending on tides and weather conditions. Driving and parking on the beach is open to vehicles from sunrise to sunset from November 1 through April 30 and from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm from May 1 through October 31.

Florida's southeast coast gets the brunt of summer's sargassum blobs, whereas beaches on Florida's west coast only get a little bit of seaweed, if any.

Other areas in the sargassum belt's target zone include the Yucatan (on the Gulf of Mexico coasts of Belize and Mexico), the Gulf of Mexico (from Florida's panhandle west into Texas), and southeast Florida, from the Florida Keys northwest to around Fort Pierce, says Barnes.
