Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Famous Americans) for Friday, October 27, 2023 (Season 40, Game 35):
On March 23, 1779 he became the first U.S. diplomat to serve overseas by presenting his credentials to a foreign government
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Brian Adams, a retired public educator from Big Bear Lake, California |
Cory Burns Barger, an orchestra musician from Riverside, California |
Erick Loh, a pastor from Northridge, California |
Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:
It’s Friday today, and the end of the seventh week of strike replacement programming! Today’s Champions Wildcard quarterfinal features 1-day champ Erick Loh, 2-day champ Cory Burns Barger, and 3-day champ Brian Adams! Based on these numbers alone, and how the 3-day champs have generally been performing so far in Champions Wildcard, I would say that Brian is probably the favorite in this one. However, as we saw yesterday—absolutely anything can happen!
One thing I would like to note—there’s a small chance that my results update this afternoon will be delayed; I have a friend visiting this morning from England and it might delay my being able to watch the show as I usually do. Thank you very much for your understanding!

Due to the allyship in the late 18th century between the Americans and the French (France was one of the first countries to recognize American sovereignty, and French provided assistance to the United States during the Revolutionary War), France became the first country to officially receive an American diplomat in 1779—Benjamin Franklin became the first United States Minister to France in that year. Franklin served in France until 1785; the official title was Minister Plenipotentiary from the United States of America at the Court of Versailles. The title became upgraded to Ambassador in the late 19th century, after the French Third Republic continued to use the title Ambassador. (Prior to this, only Great Power monarchies had been permitted to use the diplomatic title Ambassador.)
I think this might be a slightly more difficult Final than some of the others this week, though the way in is definitely knowing that the U.S. had diplomatic relations with France before England, and that Franklin was the first U.S. minister to France. I actually wouldn’t find this Final to be out of place in a Tournament of Champions context.

Cory dominated the first part of Double Jeopardy, finding both Daily Doubles early on! She doubled up through the first one, but lost $6,000 on the second! This brought Erick and Brian back into the game; a strong performance in the Broadway category from Erick meant he held a lead going into Final!

Brian gave the correct response, while Cory and Erick gave the other two very plausible incorrect responses (Jefferson was the second representative to France, while Adams was the first one to England). This means that Brian was a surprise semi-finalist!
Tonight’s results:
Brian $5,400 + $5,400 = $10,800 (Who Benjamin Franklin?) (Semi-Finalist)
Cory $9,600 – $3,000 = $6,600 (Who is Jefferson?)
Erick $12,200 – $7,001 = $5,199 (Who is John Adams?)

Andy’s Thoughts:
- I know that some of Reddit will be results-oriented and dislike Cory’s bet on DD3, but I’m okay with it—there was still a lot of game left to be played, and she would have been in a very strong position going into Final had she been correct.
- Today’s box score: October 27, 2023 Box Score.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Erick $12,200 Cory $9,600 Brian $5,400)
Erick: Cover bet over Cory is $7,001. (Actual bet: $7,001)
Cory: Standard cover bet over Brian is $1,201. (Actual bet: $3,000)
Brian: You have two choices here: if you think Cory is going to bet small, you need to go all in to pass her if she’s incorrect. If you think Cory will bet big, limit your bet to $200 or less to play for the Triple Stumper. (Actual bet: $5,400)
